NCAA approves 30-sec shot clock, other changes to men’s basketball

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved the new rules in a conference call yesterday, supposedly making the game — which some have deemed “unwatchable” — more accessible and appealing to a broader audience. (The Panel also approved a switch to four 10-minute quarters for women’s basketball, instead of the traditional two 20-minute periods.)

To see if the Panel was successful, The Hustler breaks down some of the new rules and explains how they are supposed to improve fans’ experience of men’s basketball.

Rule #1: Decreasing the shot clock from 35 to 30 seconds.

Definition: The shot clock is a timer used to keep the pace of the game going, and it gives the offense a certain amount of time to attempt a field goal (basket/score).
